Aug 30, 2009 · 1045 makes excellent drifts and hammers. It's a medium carbon steel making it tough rather than hard. Though it will make good axes, mauls, etc. and cores or layers in billets for knives it isn't quite high C enough for a stand alone blade.
Can be hammer forged. 1045 can be used where greater strength is required than can be obtained from the lower carbon steels. It responds to heat treatment, and a wide range of properties can be obtained. In thicker sections, partial hardening increases strength substantially, and flame or induction hardening produces a high surface hardness.
Oct 30, 2013 · i suggest to buy a cheap hammer at your hardware store and reforge it to the shape you would like, this way you don't have to make an eye and you already have a block of hardenable steel. when you have forged the wanted shape, make a drift (can just be mild steel) to true up the hammer eye and make it slightly hourglass shaped. check if the

Jul 15, 2011 · 1045 is going to be a water hardening steel. However, it has low carbon, just about at the threshold of what will harden at all. It may just come out tough, like 4140.

1040, 1045 (HR,CF) Used when greater strength and hardness is desired in the as rolled condition. Good for hammer forge processes. Good for hammer forge processes. Uses include gears, shafts, axles, bolts sand studs. 1040 is a medium carbon steel composed of 0.37 to 0.44 percent carbon, 0.6 to 0.9 percent manganese, a maximum of 0.04 percent phosphorus and a maximum of 0.05 sulphur.

General characteristics of Carbon Steel 1045. C1045 is a medium carbon, medium tensile steel supplied as forged or normalized. This steel shows reasonable strength and toughness. C1045 will through harden to 2.5” (63mm) with a tensile strength of 66 120 Ksi (620 850 MPa)
1045 is a medium carbon steel is used when greater strength and hardness is desired than in the "as rolled" condition. Extreme size accuracy, straightness and concentricity combine to minimize wear in high speed applications. Turned, ground and polished bars can
Jul 15, 2011 · 1045 is going to be a water hardening steel. However, it has low carbon, just about at the threshold of what will harden at all. It may just come out tough, like 4140. Even if it does get hard,it will have poor wear resistance, and if a knife, won't hold an edge very well at all.
Aug 27, 2008 · I agree that 1045 is a less than optimal steel, but the question was HAS anyone use 1045 for knifemaking. Perfectly suitable swords (and many knives) have been made for over a thousand years from steel assaying around 1045 1050. Are they better than a modern 1095 sword or knife?.No.
Blacksmiths Depot carries 1018, 1045, 1075 and 1095 high carbon steel and patterned Damascus in a variety of forms. Browse our steel stock and hardy shanks.
Carbon 1045 is a higher strength alternative to 1018, as a result of the higher carbon content. It is the most popular medium carbon steel. It is very popular for
